Meet the Avery's

Our Family and Farm
For generations, the Avery family has tended this land with love, faith, and unwavering resilience.
Avery Farms is the oldest working farm in Avery County. In the early 1700s, the Queen of England gifted this land to Colonel Waightstill Avery. Since then, the Avery family has owned, worked, and cherished this land for generations.
Through the years, we have faced many hardships, but the Lord has always made a way for us—just as He continues to do today. In March of 2023, we lost our beloved Waightstill Avery Jr., affectionately known as “Big Waightstill.” It’s impossible to put into words all that he was and all that he did. He was larger than life—strengthening our roots, shaping our family, and helping build the farm we love.
Today, the farm is run by Waightstill Avery III and his wife, Dawn, along with the help of their three children: Lauren, Graham, and Sawyer.
Tragically, Waightstill and Dawn lost their home during Hurricane Helene. In October of 2025, a little over a year after the hurricane, they were finally able to move back home. Lauren, the oldest, is a physical therapist who loves the farm deeply. Graham works full-time on the farm, and his wife, Logan, is an active supporter of the family’s work and legacy. They have a 2-year-old daughter, Asa. Sawyer, the youngest, also works on the family farm. His wife, Hailey, is a dedicated school teacher who shares a deep love for the land and the family’s heritage. Together, they welcomed their first daughter, Kollyns, in October 2024.
Avery Farms is more than a place—it’s a legacy of faith, hard work, and family. It’s also a treasured local landmark, where countless memories have been made. The farm has hosted weddings, birthday celebrations, and photo sessions in every season, continuing to bring joy to our community year after year.
